Celebrity Surgeon’s 007-Inspired Brazilian Private Island Lists for $100M

Once owned by the surgeon behind the “Brazilian butt lift,” Pitanguy Island has the potential to add 30,000 sq ft of luxury living space – and a hefty $134m in redevelopment premium, thanks to additional planning.

A private island 100 miles southwest of Rio with ready-made luxury resort infrastructure is on the market for US $100 million, and with planning permission in place, the tantalising opportunity to add a $134 million redevelopment premium in the future.

Known locally as Ilha dos Porcos Grande – or Big Pig’s Island – Pitanguy was originally purchased in 1973 by pioneering Brazilian cosmetic surgeon to the stars Dr Ivo Pitanguy, the man behind the ‘Brazilian butt lift’ and an eponymous skincare line.

Pitanguy used the island as a private family retreat, while members of his ‘inner circle’, high-profile clients and VIP guests would take advantage of the seclusion when recovering from surgery.

A household name for New York and Hollywood elite as well as royalty, politicians and the world’s billionaires, high-profile guests who have stayed on the boar-shaped island include Tom Cruise, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.

Listed through London-based Beauchamp Estates, it’s the first time the island has been available to purchase in over four decades, presenting a rare opportunity to build on established island infrastructure to create a luxury resort or an exceptional ultra-private sanctuary and generational legacy asset.

1970s: Pitanguy’s reconstruction work begins

For a man whose career was driven by enhancing human form, Pitanguy Island was a topographical extension of the desire to manufacture perfection, remodelling the island to his exacting beauty standards, even drawing inspiration from James Bond movies.

Inspired by Scaramanga Island, known as “James Bond Island”, in Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay, Pitanguy worked closely with Brazilian architect Paulo Coelho to create a series of gently rolling hills, pathways and service roads, while installing an electrical generator and other utilities.

In an interview with The Times, Pitanguy’s son, Bernardo Pitanguy, described the island as “his father’s sculpture”.

The private sanctuary has 14,975 square feet of built-up space, including a pool and a tennis court, with buildings and interiors also heavily influenced by 1970s James Bond cinematography.

The island’s six futuristic bungalows and nine suites have a distinct 007 flavour, with modernist design elements taken from the 1974 James Bond movie, “The Man with the Golden Gun”, which features a private island lair.

Exteriors have white render facades, sleek, curved walls, spectacular full-height glazed windows overlooking the ocean and gardens, and open-plan interiors that blend the indoors with natural outdoor views.

Pitanguy Island: Ripe for development

The Pitanguy estate represents a ‘legacy asset’ – an increasing rarity in the Angra dos Reis market, which coupled with the potential redevelopment premium should test any luxury developer’s appetite.

Despite its 1970s structural footprint creating a modernisation challenge, the island delivers a luxury hospitality developer’s dream on many levels. Pitanguy’s value could be further increased by up to $100 million according to agents, with significant development opportunities across land, buildings and sea.

Under existing planning permissions, the current buildings could be refurbished or rebuilt within their existing footprints.

Agents also claim that the buildings could also be expanded vertically to create two-storey villas with a total built area of up to 29,945 square feet. Subject to approval from the local municipal authority and the Brazilian Navy, there’s also scope to build a single mansion at the island’s eastern end.

Described as “one of the most exclusive private islands in the world”, Gary Hersham, Founder of Beauchamp Estates, said that the island “represents not only a unique trophy real estate asset but also offers extraordinary potential”.

“The island could remain an exceptional private retreat for a discerning multi-millionaire or billionaire, or could be transformed, subject to planning, into a highly exclusive Necker Island style hospitality resort with 5-star amenities of global relevance,” he added.

The island’s natural assets could also potentially be redeveloped or added to.

They include three private white-sand beaches, an extensive network of trails, freshwater springs, tropical gardens,  preserved forest, and a deep-water pier designed to host large yachts and luxury vessels.

Angra dos Reis – a boutique tourism destination

The private island sits in the wider Angra dos Reis (Bay of Kings), one of Brazil’s premier coastal destinations, and is dotted with 365 islands lapped by crystalline waters and fringed with white sands.

Growth is increasingly focused on higher-value tourism rather than mass tourism, with significant investment in luxury yachting, adventure and cruise tourism, diving and the boutique resort segment.

Several of the islands have been developed into luxury resorts. A number of wellness-focused retreats, eco-lodges, marina developments and high-end resorts are also in the delivery pipeline.

The island sits approximately 100 miles southwest of Rio and is accessible by private aircraft in roughly 35 to 40 minutes, by helicopter in about 40 minutes, or by private boat charter from the Angra dos Reis mainland in around 15 minutes. Its marina can accommodate yachts of approximately 50 metres.

The investors' view

The $100 million Pitanguy Island listing tests the resilience of the Brazilian luxury market, offering a roadmap for hospitality-led development in Angra dos Reis.

If this asset sells at the $100m ask, it confirms a divergence in the Brazilian luxury market: while mass tourism struggles, high-barrier-to-entry private assets are decoupling from broader real estate stagnation.
